Common Body of Knowledge (CBOK)

Mission:

The mission of the "Common Body of Knowledge" (CBOK) project is to develop a document outlining the "core" items of knowledge that all Information Systems Professionals should possess.

Plan:

Due to the wide spread interest and continued need for a Common Body of Knowledge (CBOK) for professionals in the Information Systems industry, a joint project of several Education Foundations or organizations should be implemented. The expertise and resources of several organizations is essential to the succes s of the project.

Outcomes:

The development of a CBOK can be an important foundation for the growth of the Information Systems profession. With such a definition, potential employers will have a starting point for interviewing and, legislators wishing to develop programs to protect the public will have a point of reference for their deliberations. CBOK information is necessary to develop and create appropriate certifying examinations for our industry. ICCP Certification Council needs such information in order to create and offer up-to-date certification examinations as the computer technology changes. Another possible outcome of a CBOK might be the development of a program for the certification of educ ational curriculums and training programs, both public and private.

Future Activities and Services:

Currently, Certification and Accreditation organizations do not certify or accredit Information Systems Curricula of colleges and universities. As an outgrowth of CBOK, the sponsoring organizations should establish periodic reviews for the purpose of updating the CBOK. This step would be a logical progression for the ICCP as a service to the industry.

Develop a Budget:

It is estimated that by using volunteers and society staff resources the total cost of the project should not exceed $20,000. If outside services were engaged, this cost could easily double or triple. If you are interested in helping to fund this project, we would appreciate any amount you can donate. Current Status of CBOK:
