Selling Project Management

Research Update

This is a short update from the research team working on progress to date of the 3-year study (1999-2001) on Selling Project Management to Senior Executives.

This project has been partially funded by the Project Management Institute (PMI®), with additional support from Athabasca University, St. Albert, Alberta Canada the University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, CIPS, IBM Canada, CIO, PMI SAC, ESI International and the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).

Phase One (1999 – 2000): The research team began the study with semi-structured interviews with Project Managers, Consultants and Executives to identify the key issues and challenges involved in “selling” project management. The term selling is used to describe the practices of getting senior management’s attention to the topic.

The findings from this were presented at the PMI® Symposium in 2000 and as part of the study, they developed a model to test in Phase Two. As well they have published articles in PM Network (January 2001 and the Project Management Journal (in press).

Phase Two (2000 – 2001): In this phase, the team used the findings from Phase One to develop a survey instrument. They issued the on-line survey to an international audience through a company called SurveySite.

In May, 2002 they gathered the raw data (1,867 participants) and began conducting the analysis. The team is noticing some interesting patterns in terms of the differences in views between consultants and project managers in their understanding of and practices used to promote project management to executives.

Next Steps:

The team anticipates completing the qualitative and quantitative analysis by the fall of 2001 and will be presenting the findings at the PMI® Symposium in November of this year. Athabasca University is also hosting a series of breakfast meetings Canada-wide as per the following schedule for two reasons. The morning sessions consist of a review and update of the PMI research study.

Please e-mail CIMoffice@athabascau.ca or contact AU at 1-800-561-4650 to register for the Breakfast Sessions or to get an update of the information.
