Establishes CBOK Alliance
Des Plaines, IL
- The ICCP Education Foundation announces the establishment of an
international Alliance of Professional Organizations to research
and compile an Information Technology (IT) Common body of Knowledge
(CBOK). This effort will be known as the IT CBOK Project.
The mission of
the IT CBOK will be to develop and publish a document outlining
the agreed upon "core" areas of knowledge, skills, and abilities
that all Information Technology/Systems Professionals should possess.
The IT CBOK will be compiled from many sources which have already
developed and published Bodies of Knowledge (BOKS) and/or developed
them as the underpinnings of certification programs in any IT-related
discipline. The primary sources will be existing non-vendor specific
BOKS developed and published by non-profit professional associations
and organizations worldwide. Another source will be "Model" curriculums
for Computer Science and Computer Information Science undergraduate
and graduate programs, also published by non-profit organizations.
There are five
major steps to the development of the IT CBOK, in which we would
like to have broad participation and input:
1. Finding or building
a data base or tools or set of data bases for the existing Bodies
of Knowledge.
2. Finding and
utilizing a "search engine" or other tool to permit mapping/cross
indexing of "similar" Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs), based
initially on keyword, phrases and word strings.
3. Mapping of the
"outlines" and adoption or development of a "generic" outline of
the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) categories, based on
the candidate BOKS.
4. Analysis of
the "similar" keywords, phrases, and word strings to develop or
adopt one of them as the "generic" model IT CBOK description of
that particular KSA.
5. Develop and
publish a report with the Model IT CBOK internationally, after review
by qualified, interested parties worldwide.
PLAN: Due to the
widespread interest and continued need for a Common Body of Knowledge
for professionals in the Information Systems industry, an alliance
of several Education Foundations and other IT/IS related organizations
should be implemented to form the IT CBOK Alliance which will jointly
manage the IT CBOK Project. It is hoped that as many professional
organizations as possible, representing all sectors and specialties
within the IT industry, will choose to join the IT CBOK Alliance.
It is particularly
hoped that those organizations which have developed a relevant Body
of Knowledge Report, a certification program, or a Model Curriculum
will choose to participate in the Alliance. The IT CBOK Alliance
will cooperate together to provide the resources and expertise essential
to insure the success of the project. Representatives nominated
by it CBOK Alliance members will manage the IT CBOK Project.
OUTCOMES: The development
of a IT CBOK can be an important foundation for the growth of Information
Technology and Systems as a profession. With such a definition,
potential employers will have a starting point for establishing
and evaluating candidate qualifications and developing appropriate
training plans and programs, individuals will have a clearer understanding
of the baseline KSAs required to be an IT professional, and legislators
wishing to develop programs to promote the common good and protect
the public will have a point of reference for their deliberations.
IT CBOK information is necessary to create and qualify/accredit
certifying examinations for our industry. For example, the ICCP
Certification Council could use such information in order to create
and offer up-to-date certification examinations as computer/information
technology changes. Another possible outcome of an IT CBOK might
be the development of a program for the certification/accreditation
of educational curriculums and training programs, both public and
private.
MEMBERSHIP AND
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

in the IT CBOK Alliance may request membership or additional information
by sending E-Mail or a letter

The ICCP Education
Foundation will coordinate the establishment and management of the
